No matter the time of the year or the location of your wedding, beach-themed weddings can be great fun and accomplished relatively inexpensively.  Creating your wedding reception centerpieces to reflect a beach theme can add a warm, tropical feeling to even the most drab of winter days.

Make sure your centerpieces include shells, sand, and lots of blue.  You or your friends may have a number of sea shells you have collected during past vacations and bags of shells can be purchased and most craft shops and many discount stores.  Decorative sand in many colors can be purchased in the same stores.  With just a few items, you can develop a number of centerpiece ideas such as the examples below.

Create miniature oceans with your table centerpieces!  Purchase or gather small fish bowls and fill the bottom with sand topped with some shells, then add water.  Add a floating candle for more romantic feel.  The candles may be white, colored, or even shell shaped.  Alternatives to floating candles include small boats and tropical flower petals.
Small, clear vases or bottles can be filled with sand in layers of varying colors for another easy and inexpensive centerpiece.  Considering using two or three vases of varying sizes for each table centerpiece and place a mirror underneath.  Add a few shells on the mirror and a couple of “sea breeze” or similar scented candles for the final touches.

Wedding favors, a popular way to thank your guests for their love and support, can also serve another function as your reception centerpieces.  Just be sure your guests know to take an item from the centerpiece with them!  The possibilities are many, but a few examples include shell shaped soaps or candles; picture frames decorated with sea shells, sailboats, lighthouses, buoys, floats, or other items reminiscent of the beach; and miniature lighthouses.
For an overall fresh ocean feeling, remember to incorporate a clear sea blue either in your centerpieces, table linens, or other decorations.  White, sandy tan colors, and yellow are all great complementary colors to this gorgeous blue.

And be sure to carry the beach theme beyond the centerpieces to the rest of your reception.  Everyone smiles at the thought of a beach getaway, so add to the happiness of your wedding day with a fresh and fun beach theme.  Bring out the beach balls to liven up the dance, start a conga line, and have the DJ run a limbo contest.  Don’t forget to have the caterer serve up some tropical drinks complete with the little paper umbrellas—another item you could add to your beach-themed reception centerpieces!
